How to Save Money on Cruise Ship Wi-Fi (and Stay Connected at Sea)

How to Save Money on Cruise Ship Wi-Fi (and Stay Connected at Sea)

Cruise ship internet has come a long way in the past few years. With Royal Caribbean, and most major cruise lines, now using Starlink satellite internet, speeds are faster and more reliable than ever. But let’s be real—Wi-Fi packages aren’t cheap. If you’re looking for ways to stay connected without blowing your budget, here are some tried-and-true strategies.

1. Take Advantage of Crown & Anchor Perks

If you’re a Royal Caribbean loyalist, your Crown & Anchor Society status comes with Wi-Fi benefits:

  • Diamond members: 1 free day of VOOM Surf+Stream internet
  • Diamond Plus members: 2 free days
  • Pinnacle members: unlimited VOOM for one device for the entire sailing

2. Use Onboard Credit (OBC) for Internet

Onboard credit is one of the easiest ways to offset the cost of internet. A couple tips here:

  • NextCruise OBC: If you purchase a **NextCruise Certificate** on a previous cruise, that future booking will usually come with extra OBC. When you apply it to your sailing, you’ll have onboard credit available to spend on Wi-Fi.
  • Instead of letting OBC disappear on impulse buys, use it toward your Wi-Fi plan—it’s basically “free internet.”

💡 We make a habit of always purchasing a NextCruise Certificate on every sailing because we always know we’ll be sailing again and it’s free money.

3. Buy the Right Length Package

Royal Caribbean sells internet in 24-hour increments, and you can choose how many days you want:

  • Buying one day at a time works if you only need it occasionally.
  • Purchasing a multi-day package almost always drops the per-day cost.

If you know you’ll need steady access, buy the longer package in advance for the best rate. Royal will always run a sale on these packages pre-cruise and sometimes you can grab them at 50% off.

4. Share a Plan With Your Travel Partner

You don’t necessarily both need your own plan. With a one-device package, you can:

  • Log in, use your device, then log out.
  • Your travel partner can then log in on their device with the same credentials.

It means you can’t both stream TikTok at the same time, but if you’re just checking emails, messages, or uploading photos, this is a great way to cut the cost in half.

5. Don’t Bring a Travel Router

In the past, travelers used travel routers to share a single Wi-Fi package across multiple devices. But as of early 2025, Royal Caribbean has officially banned travel routers (they’re now on the prohibited items list), and some guests report they’ve been confiscated at security.

Bottom line: skip the router. If you need multiple devices online simultaneously, buy the official “two-device” plan instead.

6. Protect Yourself With a VPN

Even if your company doesn’t require it, using a VPN is smart practice whenever you’re on a public or semi-public network (like cruise Wi-Fi or a port café). It adds an extra layer of security, protects your privacy, and reduces the risk of data interception.

7. Work Smarter, Not Harder

If you’re working remotely from the ship, Wi-Fi reliability is key. A few quick notes:

  • Timing matters: Speeds are often best early in the morning or late at night.
  • Test your VPN before you sail so you know it works over Starlink.
  • Have a backup plan in case the ship’s connection goes down mid-meeting.

(We’ll share a full post soon dedicated to working from a cruise ship.)

8. Use Port Days Strategically

Want to save big? Skip the ship’s Wi-Fi altogether and catch up in port. Many destinations have reliable cafés or restaurants with free Wi-Fi:

  • In Cozumel, San Juan, and Nassau, you’ll find hotspots within walking distance of the pier.
  • Just keep in mind: you’re trading precious port time for connectivity.

9. Use Royal Caribbean’s Intranet for Free App Access & Messaging

You don’t always need a paid Wi-Fi plan to stay connected on board. Royal Caribbean’s intrAnet is free and lets you:

  • Access the Royal Caribbean app for daily schedules, dining reservations, and activity bookings.
  • Use the in-app messaging system to text other guests on the ship.

⚠️ Heads up: while handy, the messaging feature can be spotty at best—sometimes messages are delayed or don’t come through at all. Still, it’s a no-cost way to coordinate with your travel group without buying internet – when it works.

10. Do You Really Need Internet?

At the end of the day, a cruise is one of the few vacations where you can truly disconnect. Before the days of Starlink, a big reason we cruised was to NOT be expected to answer work emails while on vacation – you literally could not get in contact with me in the middle of the sea. Ask yourself:

  • Do you need to be online 24/7?
  • Or could you use the time to unplug and reconnect with your travel partner, family, or simply enjoy the sea?

Sometimes the best Wi-Fi savings tip is to skip the package entirely and embrace being offline.

Final Thoughts

Cruise internet will never be as cheap as your home service—but thanks to Starlink, it’s faster and more reliable than ever. Between Crown & Anchor perks, using onboard credit, choosing the right package, and even sharing access with your travel partner, you can stay connected at sea without overspending.

Royal Caribbean Diamond Plus vs. Casino Prime

Which Matters More

If you’re a frequent cruiser with Royal Caribbean, you’ve probably heard fellow travelers brag about their Diamond Plus status in Crown & Anchor Society or their Prime status in Casino Royale. Both loyalty programs offer amazing perks, but they work very differently. So which one actually matters more – Diamond Plus or Casino Prime? Let’s dive in.

What Is the Crown & Anchor Society?

The Crown & Anchor Society is Royal Caribbean’s official cruise loyalty program. Every night you sail earns you points, with bonus points for suites or solo bookings. These points add up to higher tiers and better perks.

Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Levels

  • Gold (3–29 points) – Welcome gifts, exclusive member offers.
  • Platinum (30–54 points) – Discounts on internet packages, onboard offers.
  • Emerald (55–79 points) – Bigger discounts and early access perks.
  • Diamond (80–174 points) – 4 daily drink vouchers, Diamond Lounge access, priority boarding.
  • Diamond Plus (175–699 points) – 5–6 daily drinks, balcony discounts, exclusive events, priority seating at shows.
  • Pinnacle (700+ points) – Free milestone cruises, ultimate recognition.

How to Join Crown & Anchor

Enrollment is free and automatic after your first cruise, or you can sign up on Royal Caribbean’s website before you sail.

What Is Casino Royale on Royal Caribbean?

Casino Royale is Royal Caribbean’s casino rewards program. Unlike Crown & Anchor, which is based on nights sailed, Casino Royale is based on casino play points.

Casino Royale Levels

  • Choice – Entry level; everyone starts here.
  • Prime (2,500 points per year) – Free annual cruise, free drinks in the casino, priority boarding.
  • Signature (25,000 points) – Two free cruises, suite offers, VIP invites.
  • Masters (100,000 points) – Luxury comped cruises, top-tier recognition.

Casino Royale Perks

There are 4 parts to the Casino Royale Perks:

1. Instant Cruise Credit

As soon as you start gambling with your SeaPass card, you start earning points that can convert into onboard credits or discounts on your next sailing. Every sailing will have a list of what you can get at each point level. On the Casino Royal host deck you will see a print out of a bunch of QR codes. Take a picture of that and each QR code represents a different point value and will open a .pdf of perks you can get with those points. You can earn a free cruise with as little as 500 points sometimes.

You don’t really ‘redeem’ points because once you hit whatever point level you are, you keep those in your account for the entire casino year and can build on them toward status. But let’s say you hit 500 points and stop there. You redeem your Instant Cruise Credit for a cruise and on that cruise you earn 500 more. You now have 1000 points toward your 2500 point Prime status but you would only qualify for the 500 point instant cruise credit offerings on that second sailing.

Cruises that are offered are only for specific sailings, but I’ve found they have a pretty good selection. Exclusions usually consist of the newest ship and Holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc).

2. Annual Free Cruise Certificate (Prime+)

Once you hit 2500 points within a casino year – you will earn Prime Status and be awarded a free cruise certificate. These certificates are for specific sailings, as well. Usually the exclusions are the same as for the Instant Cruise Credit. We were able to score a 7 day European cruise on the Oasis of the Seas and use our annual free cruise certificate. The certificates are usually awarded in April.

3. Weekly Casino Promotions

This is where I think you really hit the mother load. Weekly – sometimes multiple times a week, we receive emails and paper mailers with selected free cruises. The selection is more limited but they are pretty constant, assuming you’re still an active gambler on cruises you are taking. If you stop gambling the offers sort of dry up.

There is inconsistent data on who gets what offers but I can confirm, you do not have to be Prime to receive offers. You probably get more and better offers at Prime, but even as our Prime status expired in March of this year, we are still getting offers weekly.

You can book as many of these cruises as your hearts and PTO allowance allows. If we were retired and didn’t have dogs – i can tell you we’d be doing multiple back-to-back cruises using these offers.

How to Join Casino Royale

It’s automatic once you start playing. Insert your SeaPass card at a slot machine or hand it to the dealer at a table, and you’re enrolled.

How Crown & Anchor and Casino Royale Work Together

This is where the real magic happens.

  • A Diamond Plus guest already enjoys free daily drinks, lounge access, and priority perks. Add Casino Prime, and suddenly you’re also getting free drinks in the casino and a free cruise every year. That’s completely eliminated our need to purchase any drink package for soda or alcohol.
  • Upgrading free cruises: Casino Royale comp offers are usually for Interior or Oceanview rooms, but you can pay the difference to move up to a balcony or suite. Totally optional, but a great way to cruise more comfortably for less. But this isn’t always true, you can sometimes snag a balcony or suite.
  • Comped cruises still earn Crown & Anchor points. This is the real superpower. You’re not just cruising for free—you’re also climbing Crown & Anchor tiers faster.

🎲 High Roller Tip: If you AND your spouse both earn prime, you can combine offers for upgrades, or book two connecting rooms and have your own private suite.

Royal Caribbean’s Top Tier Event

Our Story: Cracking the Code

For years, we paid full price for cruises while casually spending in the casino. That got us to Diamond—but slowly, and at full cost. Once we learned that comped cruises still earn Crown & Anchor points, we leveraged Casino Royale offers and shot up to Diamond Plus with far less out-of-pocket.

Extra Perk: Status Match

Royal Caribbean automatically matches Crown & Anchor status across Celebrity Cruises and Silversea.

✨But here’s the hidden gem: you can also use your Casino Royale status to secure comps on other lines. For example, I was able to snag a free Panama Canal cruise on Holland America by showing proof of my Royal Caribbean Prime status. Carnival does something similar.

Diamond Plus vs. Casino Prime: Which Matters More?

Honestly, it depends on your style:

  • 🔹If you cruise often but don’t gamble → Crown & Anchor Diamond Plus has more consistent value.
  • 🔹If you enjoy the casino → Casino Prime can unlock multiple free cruises a year.
  • 🔹If you do both → You’re stacking free cruises, free drinks, and status perks—it’s the sweet spot.

💡The smartest strategy? Leverage Casino Royale to reach Crown & Anchor tiers faster.

Power Tip: NextCruise Certificates

Every cruise, we buy a NextCruise (Future Cruise Certificate). It works like this:

  • 🔹You pay a reduced deposit onboard.
  • 🔹You get bonus onboard credit (OBC) for your next sailing.
  • 🔹Even on comped Casino Royale cruises, you can usually use your NextCruise deposit to cover any port fees or upgrade cost, AND you can apply the OBC—basically turning it into extra casino play money.

How We Cruise for Free on Casino Comps

…and Why It’s Not What You Think.

Leveraging Royal Caribbean Casino Prime for smarter travel

Most people assume you need to be a high-roller to get free cruises. Or that “comped” trips are some kind of sketchy, too-good-to-be-true deal.

The truth? My husband and I have been cruising for years on Royal Caribbean casino comps, and it’s one of the smartest travel hacks we’ve ever leaned into. We’re Diamond Plus loyalty members, we travel often, and we’ve paid far less out-of-pocket than most people sitting at the same slot machine or eating at the same Windjammer buffet.

And no, cruising free doesn’t mean you “can’t afford to cruise.” (Yes, someone actually said that to me once. 🙄) It means you’re playing the loyalty game smarter.

🎲 What Is Royal Caribbean Casino Prime Status?

On Royal Caribbean, when you play in the onboard casino, you earn points. Play enough in a year and you can qualify for Prime status.

Prime unlocks some juicy perks:

  • Free annual cruise certificate (this is the big one)
  • Complimentary drinks in the casino (plus Diamond/loyalty drinks elsewhere)
  • Exclusive offers throughout the year (discounted or free sailings, depending on your play)
  • Instant Cruise Credit (if you earn Prime Status on 1 cruise instead of spreading it out)

It resets every April, so most comp cruisers plan their play around the calendar. I talk more about the differences between Casino Prime and Crown & Anchor programs here

🛳 How We Actually Use It

For us, the casino isn’t just about gambling — it’s about strategic play to renew Prime. My husband plays at a level that comfortably earns Prime each year, and we treat the comps as part of our travel strategy.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

  • 🔹Our upcoming Harmony of the Seas sailing out of Galveston? Comped.
  • 🔹We’re using it partly to enjoy a week onboard, partly to make sure his Prime status renews.
  • 🔹We don’t even plan to get off the ship — the value is in sea days, entertainment, and the casino itself.
  • And let’s be honest – it’s about not having to cook or clean for a week.

We still pay gratuities, port taxes, insurance and extras. But the core fare? Covered.

Galveston Sailing – COMPED! 🎰🎰🎰

💸 Is It Really “Free”?

Let’s be clear: the cruise line isn’t handing out free cabins out of charity. The casino is their profit center, and they’re rewarding loyalty the same way airlines reward frequent flyers.

But here’s the kicker — if you already enjoy playing in the casino, those dollars now stretch further because they come back to you as comped trips.

Not Free
But Smarter

For us, it means we’ve saved thousands on cruises we would have happily taken anyway. Another way to think of it – is we are ‘prepaying’ for our cruise via the Casino.

But even if the fare is free, we never cruise without insurance.

We personally use Allianz Travel Insurance for our trips and have been really happy with the coverage. Knock on wood we’ve never had to submit a claim.

That said, travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. If you’d like to compare multiple providers side-by-side, we recommend checking out InsureMyTrip, where you can see plans from Allianz and many others. I’ve personally used it and felt it was very easy to use.

🧭 Why This Works for Us

1. We cruise often. More sailings = more opportunities to use offers.

2. We know our budget. We don’t overspend in the casino chasing comps.

3. We stack perks. Diamond Plus loyalty + Prime casino = layered freebies (drinks, discounts, Wi-Fi deals).

And if you’re wondering how people can afford to cruise so much they earn Diamond Plus – they do it with casino comps! Most Diamond Plus members didn’t pay for all those cruises.

4. We’re strategic. We treat the comp cruise as part of our annual planning, not just a lucky windfall.

🛟 The Misconceptions

I’ll never forget posting once about using RCL credit card points for a free cruise, and someone replied:

“If that’s how you’re cruising, you can’t afford to cruise.”

That’s exactly backwards. The smartest cruisers maximize every program available — loyalty, credit cards, comps — so they can sail more often, for less money, in more comfort.

🚀 The Takeaway

Casino comps aren’t about being reckless or living beyond your means. They’re about knowing the system and using it to your advantage.

For us, they’ve turned cruising from a once-a-year splurge into a lifestyle — and they’re a big part of how we’re planning future adventures (yes, even a world cruise).

So the next time you hear “comped cruise,” don’t roll your eyes. Chances are, the person in that free cabin is cruising smarter than you think.
